Working with Words

The purpose of this block is to ensure that all children read, spell, and use high-frequency words correctly, and that they learn the patterns necessary for decoding and spelling.  (Spelling and Phonics)

Segment One:      Word Wall

1.     introduce five new words for the week

2.     see, say, chant, write, trace

3.     on-the-back activity

Segment Two: Decoding/Spelling Activity

Teacher guides whole class activities to help children learn spelling patterns.  Activities may include: Making Words, Guess the Covered Word, Using Words You Know, Rounding Up the Rhymes, and others.

Multilevel:

All activities in this block are inherently multilevel.  While some students are learning to read the words, others may be learning to spell them.  The words progress from short to longer words.  The manipulation of letters range from easy to more complex.  The fast-paced nature of the activities keep advanced students challenged and on-task as struggling students achieve success in short increments with little to no pressure.
