Self-Selected Reading
The purpose of this block is to build fluency in reading, to allow students to read and enjoy text that is appropriate to their own independent reading levels, and to build confidence in students as readers.
Segment One: Teacher
Read-Aloud
The
teacher reads aloud to all students from a variety of genres, topics, and
authors. (Bless a Book)
Segment Two: Independent
Reading and Conferencing
1. Students
choose a selection on their level to read independently.
2. The
teacher holds conferences with 3-5 children daily as the other children
read. She keeps a conference form
recording each child’s individual progress, preferences, and responses. Every child will have a one-on-one
conference with the teacher every week.
Segment Three:
Sharing
1. Several
students share (approximately two minutes each) with the whole class what they
have read.
2. The
reader answers several question from classmates about the selection. (Teacher
has modeled types of thoughtful questions)
Multilevel:
Students choose what they want to read. A wide range of levels, topics, and genres need to be available.
“…a child who does not like to read is a child who has not found the right book.” Pat Cunningham
