Guided Reading

The purpose of this block is to build comprehension and fluency with reading and to introduce students to a variety of literature, including stories, informational text, and poetry.

Segment One: Before Reading Activity

1. introduce and support grade-level and easier text in a variety of ways

2. focuses the lesson on a comprehension skill or strategy

Segment Two: Reading

1. provide flexible grouping of all students to read the text

2. students read the selections – teacher listens coaches and takes notes

Segment Three: After Reading

Teacher directs the whole group in closure activity related to the skill or strategy introduced in the Before Reading Activity

Multilevel:

At or Above grade-level students are introduced to a variety of genres, skills, and strategies.

Low functioning students:

· grade-level and easier material

· rereading to build fluency

· teacher meets individually or in small groups
