2003 Reading Challenge

Rhea Elementary School had a very successful reading program last year with students, staff and parents reading 122,697 books in a six-month period.  We celebrated with a field trip to the Henry County Airport for a fun day of activities including a cookout, airplane and helicopter tours and four staff members skydiving.  This event was such a success that we have been approved to do it again this year.  We will have an extra month to read this year so we have increased our reading goal from 100,000 up to 150,000.  Your teacher will inform you of details for your particular documentation of book numbers.

There is a link for a log for you to use at home at the bottom of this page. Enter on this log how many books your child reads, how many you read to your child, and how many books you read for yourself. We all read books as adults and I want us to count these as well. Children need to see their parents model reading and most of us read books and magazines anyway. I hope you will be pleasantly surprised at how many books you read as a family each month. Please send in the number of books on the first day of each month that you have logged. We plan to celebrate our reading success on either May 7 or May 14 with a field trip to the Henry County Airport for a tour of their facilities. If we can reach our goal of reading 150,000 books, students will get to witness two or three of our teachers and me jump out of an airplane for a skydiving experience they won’t forget.  We will also have our annual spring cookout for students, staff, and families on this day as well.

Thanks for allowing us to share the responsibility of creating challenging experiences for your child.

Sincerely,

Scott Owens

Principal
