August 2011- Giotto di Bondone (He goes by his first name.) – Florence, Italy, 1266, early Renaissance artist known for natural backgrounds and images of people expressing emotion.

                             Poster – famous Italian architecture

Suggested Project – Draw a person expressing emtion such as joy,

anger, surprise, or sadness.  Fill in the background with nature or

Italian building or a construction paper mosaic.

                            

September 2011 –Sandro Botticelli – Florence, Italy, 1444, Renaissance artist who added outlines to create depth.  Supported greatly by the Medici family.

                                      Poster – The Birth of Venus

                                      Suggested Project – Draw a person in pencil then add

                                      marker/crayon to outline it.

                                     

October 2011 – Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florence, Italy, 1475, famous for the statue of David and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

                             Poster – The Creation of Adam (the hands)

                             Suggested Project – 1) Paint a body part in detail

                                                                  2) Tape paper to the bottom of your desk and

                                                                   create on your back the way Michelangelo

                                                                   painted the Sistene Chapel.                            

 

November 2011 – Raphael Sanzio, Urbino, Italy, 1483, greatly influenced by the previous artists.

                                      Poster – Cherubini (detail)

                                      Suggested Project – Have two children draw something

                                      representing their favorite holiday, then have the other children

                                      “copy” the examples and add their own ideas.     

 

December 2011 – Edgar Degas, Paris, France, 1835, Impressionist artist who liked to paint indoors. (famous for his ballet paintings in particular.)

                                      Poster – The Star

                                      Project – 1) Paint or draw your family in VERY bright colors.

                                                        2) Draw or paint the dancers of the Nutcracker ballet.

                                     

January 2012 –  Claude Monet – Paris, France, 1840, famous artist of the Impressionist group who loved to paint outdoors

                             Poster – La Gare Saint Lazare

                             Suggested Project – Using lots of brush strokes, or crayon dots,

                             paint something “ordinary.”

                            

February 2012 -  Paul Gaugin, Paris, France, 1848, another artist grouped with the Impressionists with a different style – and who moved to a different country.

                                      Poster – The Swineherd

                                      Suggested Project – in BRIGHT colors, draw a real or

                                      imaginary far-off place

                                     

March 2012  - Pieter Bruegel, Antwerp, Belgium, 1527, influenced by Michelangelo and Raphael

                             Poster – The Harvesters

                             Suggested Project – 1) create some art that teaches a lesson

                                                                  2) draw a picture of your favorite season

                                                                  3) find Belgium on the map and learn about this

 country famous for chocolate and waffles

                                                         

April 2012 – Rembrandt, Holland, 1606, painted portraits since cameras weren’t invented yet

                             Poster – The Night Watch

                             Suggested Project – 1) create a picture of someone serious, then

                                                                   draw them in a funny costume

                                                                  2) learn about Holland and Dutch people

                            

May 2012 – Johannes Vermeer , Delft, Holland, 1632, famous for painting one or two people in a room, with light coming through the window

                             Poster – The Lacemaker

                             Suggested Project – draw one or two people doing something

                             (studying, daydreaming, etc.)
