Commonly Asked Questions:

1.  What is the Treetop Reading Clubhouse?

This is a specially designed program for 2nd graders who need extra coaching with their reading skills. It is made possible through the Race to the Top Funding which was recently awarded to the state of Tennessee.  This is the first year for this program.

2.  How was my child selected for this program?

Membership in the Treetop Reading Clubhouse is based on test data from STAR Reading tests, DRA testing, and the recommendation of your child’s homeroom teacher.

3.  Will my child still have reading with his/her homeroom teacher?

Yes.  The Treetop program is a “pull-out” intensive help program.  This means that your child will have an “appointment time” with the Treetop teacher.  During these small group lessons, your child will receive the focused extra help that he/she needs to succeed as a reader in any class.  Your homeroom teacher and the Treetop Reading Teacher will work closely together to make this process simple for you and fun for your child.

4.  Will my child get a separate reading grade on his/her report card from the Treetop classes?

No.  The Treetop teacher will forward test and performance data to the homeroom teacher to be included in your child’s regular reading grade.  You will receive regular communication about your child’s individual progress from the Treetop teacher.

5.  Will my child have extra homework from the Treetop classes?

Yes.  Our goal is to have every child ready for 3rd grade before the end of the school year.  We don’t want any child to struggle with 3rd grade work!  Since not every child learns to read easily, extra review at home is very important.  Your Treetop Reading teacher will be working with you to help you understand your child’s individual needs and how to work with him/her.  You are your child’s most important teacher, but we are so happy to help!!

6.  How will I know which homework is for the regular classroom and which is for the Treetop classes?

Your child will have a special Treetop notebook or folder that will contain special Treetop Reading work.  All work pages and communication notes will be labeled with a tree house logo (similar to the one on the main Treetop Webpage) so that you can easily recognize them.

7.  Will I be able to contact the Treetop Reading teacher?

Yes.  E-mail is easiest method:  Jan.Bertouille@parisssd.org

Voicemail is available at 642-0961, Ext. 239.

8.       What if I’m not sure how to help my child?

We plan to offer parent help sessions in which you come to school and work with your child and the Treetop Reading teacher.  These help sessions will start a little later in the school year after the children’s schedules are finalized.  Your main job right now is to let your child see YOU reading, to read books for the Rhea book logs, and to positively encourage and reward your child’s efforts in reading.  Also, check out the “Helpful Prompts” link on the main Treetop Webpage!
