Helpful Prompts

For

Struggling Readers:

1.     Look at the pictures.  See if they give you a hint for that tricky word.

2.     Look at the beginning sound in the word.

3.     Get your mouth ready to say the word.

4.     Try reading the word and keep reading to the end of the sentence.

5.     Does it sound right?

6.     Does it make sense in this story?

7.     Are there any familiar chunks in the word that you already know?

8.     Does it look like another word that you know?

9.     Use your pointing finger to keep your place.

10.  Read through to the end of the sentence.

11.  Break big words apart into parts (syllables) and try each part separately.

Scoop each syllable as you read.

12. Use your fingertips to cover up parts of big word so that you see only one part

     at a time. Do the parts look like smaller words that you know?

13.  Use your fingers to tap and say each letter’s sound, then zip the taps together quickly.
